WiFi QR Code Scanner

Reads WIFI: codes properly and shows the password as its own field.

Camera access is requested only when you press the button. Frames are decoded on this device and discarded.

A Wi-Fi QR code is not a link. It encodes a small structured string — network name, encryption type and password — using its own escaping rules. Displaying it as raw text is technically correct and practically useless, so this page parses it into three fields.

The password gets its own copy button, because retyping a 20-character Wi-Fi key from a screen is where most of the time goes.

How to use it

  1. Scan the code on the router or the guest card.
  2. Read the network name and password fields.
  3. Copy the password and connect through your device's Wi-Fi settings.

The WIFI: format and its escaping rules

The payload looks like `WIFI:T:WPA;S:MyNetwork;P:secret;H:false;;` — fields separated by semicolons, keys separated from values by colons. The catch is that a password containing a semicolon, colon, comma or backslash must escape it with a backslash, so splitting on semicolons corrupts exactly the passwords that most need to be read correctly.

The parser here scans character by character and honours the escape, which is why a password like `p@ss;word` survives intact. It is a small detail that separates a working tool from one that mangles one password in twenty.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the password shown in plain text?

Because that is what the code contains — a Wi-Fi QR code is a convenience feature, not a secret. Anyone who can see the code can read the password, which is why guest codes should be rotated when they stop being useful.

Can this connect me to the network automatically?

No. iOS can join a Wi-Fi network from a code scanned in the Camera app; browsers cannot, because they have no access to the Wi-Fi stack. Copy the password and join manually.

What if the code uses WPS instead of WPA?

The security type field shows whatever the code declares — WPA, WEP, nopass or WPS. WEP and open networks are worth treating with suspicion.
